How to connect speakers (amplified output)?

Modified on Tue, 18 Aug at 3:09 PM

To sound your spaces with the NanoPlayer Box, using its amplified output is a compact and high-performance solution. Thanks to its dual integrated Class D amplifier, this player can directly drive passive speakers without requiring additional external amplification.

Here are the steps and technical precautions to achieve a professional and secure connection.

1. Identifying the Connector

Speaker wiring is done at the rear of the unit on a detachable 3.81 mm terminal block. This system is ideal for preparing your wiring in advance and quickly connecting/disconnecting the player during installation.

2. Wiring Procedure

The terminal block is divided into four connection points for the two channels (stereo).

Wires must be inserted into the removable part of the connector, respecting the polarities indicated on the top of the device:

  • Left Channel: Terminals L+ and L-.
  • Right Channel: Terminals R- and R+.

Ensure that the wires are tightly secured to maintain stable electrical contact and avoid any risk of short circuits.

3. Speaker Specifications and Power

The NanoPlayer Box is designed to work with passive speakers with an impedance of 4 Ohms or 8 Ohms.

The output power depends on the chosen impedance (measurements taken with a 12V power supply):

  • At 4 Ohms: 2 x 13W (at 1% distortion) and up to 2 x 16W (at 10% distortion).
  • At 8 Ohms: 2 x 8W (at 1% distortion) and up to 2 x 10W (at 10% distortion).

4. Essential Safety Precautions

To preserve the electronics of your player, strictly follow these guidelines:

  • Do Not Couple Outputs: Never connect the audio outputs to each other.
  • Minimum Impedance: Never connect speakers with an impedance lower than 4 Ohms.
  • Short Circuit: Ensure that no copper strands protrude from the terminal block, as this could create a short circuit.

5. Importance of Power Supply

Using the amplified output significantly increases the player's current consumption.

While a 500mA power supply is sufficient for a line output, using speakers requires:

  • A minimum of 2A (24W) for standard listening.
  • A recommended 3.45A for full use of the device at maximum power.

Note: If your power supply is too weak, you will experience significant audio distortion (poor sound), and the power supply may overheat, potentially leading to failure.

Finally, the volume level is adjusted directly via the rotary knob on the front, which simultaneously adjusts the volume of the amplified output, line output, and headphone jacks.
