Guide to naming folders and files - NanoPlayer Box

Modified on Tue, 18 Aug at 4:56 PM

This guide explains how the naming of your content is more than just organization: it is your programming interface. Since the device has no configuration software, the order and naming of your folders and files on the SD card dictate the behavior of the NanoPlayer Box (automatic playback, interactivity, looping). This comprehensive memo includes all the essential rules for an autonomous and professional installation.

The Golden Rule for Folders (The “3-Character” Format)

Each folder at the root of your memory card must be named with 3 fixed characters following the structure: DIGIT 1 + LETTER + DIGIT 2.

  • Number of folders: The player accepts a maximum of 2 folders at the root.
  • Directory structure: Only one level of folders is allowed; subfolders are not recognized.

Meaning of the Characters:

  • Digit 1 (Folder Number):
    • 0: “Autoplay” folder, played automatically upon power-up.
    • 1: Trigger folder, played when a contact is made on the input (if allowed by folder 0).
  • Letter (Playback Mode):
    • R (Random): All files in the folder are played in random order.
    • S (Sequential): All files are played in the numeric order of their names.
    • N (New Random - Folder 1 only): On each contact, plays only one random file.
    • T (Triggered Sequential - Folder 1 only): On each contact, plays only the next file in sequence.
  • Digit 2 (Input Behavior):
    • For Folder 0: 0 calls folder 1 on contact; 1 skips to the next file in folder 0.
    • For Folder 1: Defines whether the trigger is re-triggerable (1), non-re-triggerable (0), or operates in “While” mode (2 or 3).

Audio File Naming

The naming of your media depends directly on the playback mode (letter) chosen for the folder containing them.

  • In Random Mode (R or N): File names are completely free (e.g., ambiance.mp3, accueil.wav).
  • In Sequential Mode (S or T): Names must start with 3 digits to define the ascending playback order (e.g., 001.mp3, 002.wav, 050.mp3).
  • Mixed Formats: If you place both numbered and unnumbered files in a sequential folder, only the numbered files will be played.

This naming system, although strict, offers you complete flexibility to create interactive kiosks or complex sound environments with ease.

List of Possible Folder Names

Folder No. 0 - Loop Playback on Power-Up:

  • 0R0 → Random playback, mode 0 (plays folder 1 on contact).
  • 0R1 → Random playback, mode 1 (plays next file on contact).
  • 0S0 → Sequential playback, mode 0 (plays folder 1 on contact).
  • 0S1 → Sequential playback, mode 1 (plays next file on contact).

Folder No. 1 - Triggered Playback:

  • 1R0 → The folder is played entirely in random order, non-re-triggerable.
  • 1S0 → The folder is played entirely in sequential order, non-re-triggerable.
  • 1N0 → Only one file is played randomly from folder 1, non-re-triggerable.
  • 1T0 → Only the next file is played in sequential order from folder 1, non-re-triggerable.
  • 1R1 → The folder is played entirely in random order, re-triggerable.
  • 1S1 → The folder is played entirely in sequential order, re-triggerable.
  • 1N1 → Only one file is played randomly from folder 1, re-triggerable.
  • 1T1 → Only the next file is played in sequential order from folder 1, re-triggerable.
  • 1R2 → The folder is played in random order while the contact is present on the input. Pauses on release.
  • 1S2 → The folder is played in sequential order while the contact is present on the input. Pauses on release.
  • 1N2 → Only one file is played randomly while the contact is present on the input.
  • 1T2 → Only one file is played in sequential order while the contact is present on the input.
  • 1R3 → The folder is played in random order while the contact is present. New press = return to start.
  • 1S3 → The folder is played in sequential order while the contact is present. New press = return to start.
  • 1N3 → Only one file is played randomly while the contact is present. New press = return to start.
  • 1T3 → Only one file is played in sequential order while the contact is present. New press = return to start.
